Project – Beauty in Pixels

Initial plan (27/10/13)What actually makes something beautiful? An exploration of the visual image and the consequences of its reproduction

Use Photoshop or The pixelator – take images of generally considered beautiful people and pixelate them to question whether they’re still beautiful and what beauty actually means

Also use beautiful landscape images and do same with those. Ask could they still be considered beautiful like this? E.g. the Lake District, Tuscan hills etc...

Could also use famous works of art e.g. Van Gogh and do the same. Could be interesting as they're a different form; could be considered making a work of art out of an already existing work of art. Who's to say this version has less value than the original?

Could also do it the other way round, taking something not generally considered to be attractive and pixelating it to perhaps make it beautiful/attractive

Could also include a slideshow, gradually moving along all a number of different effects of pixelating

Link to Benjamin Walter's theory on how you lose the aura with reproduction

28/10/13 - Thinking about which celebrities I should pick to represent beauty. Perhaps people like Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Julia Roberts, Mila Kunis, Channing Tatum, Kate Moss, Johnny Depp, David Beckham - representative of the general public's opinion?
Going to start messing around and experimenting with effects on different celebrities now

02/11/13 - Trying to work out how to get a photo slideshow in a Blogger blog post...

03/11/13 - Have discovered you can get a slideshow in a Blogger post through using Google Picasa, so have downloaded and am playing around with it a bit - has a good range of photo effects as well

15/11/13 - Have been looking at related things that I can bring into my project as a curator. Have looked at L'oréal's pixel perfect skin ad and the Minecraft Ordnance Survey map which both fit in well with my project

20/11/13 - Moved on to looking at works of art, could possible link this part to Walter Benjamin's article 'The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction'?

28/11/13 - Am adding in a section on retouching gone wrong, using Google Picasa to retouch in a negative way, or over-retouch

05/11/13 - Am lastly adding in a few image glitches to comment on how they are distorting the image similarly to how changing the pixelation does, and does this similarly affect the aesthetics of the image?
